on Chinese Wedding Traditions

February 16, 2007 By: marvin Category: Personal, Random Rants No Comments →

Doing preparations for a wedding was hard enough even with a coordinator around, but planning for a Chinese wedding is like having ten thousand chopsticks stuck up your nose then smiling like there’s nothing blocking your nasal airways. All you’ll ever hear are traditions this and traditions that. Believe me, if you had to follow everything by the letter, you’d end up forgetting about what a wedding is supposed to be, simply just hate yourself for being Chinese or worst end up without a bride or groom! I wonder if people in China actually still do all this stuff. Quite frankly, I’d imagine that most of these traditional hooplas are kept alive by shrewd opportunistic Chinese deli and specialty store owners in Chinatown. to ensure business would stay as they are even with the changing times where superstition and old beliefs are being pushed aside for purpose of practicality and common sense. Just to show you an example: a shop traditional Chinese specialty store owner would tell you that you’d have to buy a piss bowl and have a family member bring it up to your home. You’d ask yourself what in the name of heck is a piss bowl and what am I gonna do it?!? But he’d tell you that it’s to bring you luck and tells you that you’d have  to do these traditions so as to remind you that you are Chinese. WTF! If I needed luck I’d just buy a rabbit’s foot or horse shoe. And if I needed to be reminded that I was Chinese I’d just have to look at a mirror!
However don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying that these traditions are bad. Most of them may have been born out of practicality during the time of its conceptualization. All I’m saying is that the age old formulas should be changed or modified to suit the times. And most of them are to be followed only if it’s practical to do so. Don’t force it to be done if it is to the point of impracticality. Believe me; you just might end up killing yourself before you walk down that aisle.

PS. I apologize if I haven’t been able to answer most of the comments lately or make new posts. I’ll try to get to it as soon as I have more time on my hands.

Jigsaw Gundam

February 10, 2007 By: marvin Category: Gundam, Toys and Goodies No Comments →

I was looking thru some of my old stuff then I found this! an old Gundam Poster Jigsaw Puzzle.
Gundam Poster Puzzle
I remember pestering my dad to buy it on Sogo or Daimaru Matsusakaya when I was just a wee lad. ^^ At first he didn’t want to buy it because he felt I was too young then for a 500 piece puzzle. but in the end it was probably my teary puppydog eyes that won him over. although now after all these years it now a 499 piece jigsaw puzzle.
And though having this puzzle makes it look like I’ve been a gundam addict for the longest time, the truth was I didn’t know what a gundam was back then, all I knew was it was a picture of a robot that glowed in the dark. ^^

GP03 & Dendrobium

February 07, 2007 By: marvin Category: Model Kits, Gundam, Toys and Goodies 1 Comment →

The 1/400 Dendrobium finally had a bit of time to build it over the weekend, although I wasn’t able to put in the most of the stickers. I have to say the details on it seem to give it enough aesthetic quality that it would look good even without the complete set of stickers. although I wonder what possessed Yoshiyuki Tomino and Hajime Yatate to name the Gundams after flowers (Dendrobium and Gerbera). ^^
