Tech Secrets: Freeze fix your hard drive!

I’ve had an old hard drive die on me once before, taking my precious Image, documents, MP3’s and Anime movie files along with it. wish I knew this technique then, else I wouldn’t have just thrown the drive away. If anyone should find themselves in a similar predicament, put the drive into an air tight zip bag, wrap it in a towel, then bury it in your back yard… ^^ just kidding on the last part, take the towelled drive and pop it into the freezer for a few hours. Put the drive back into your computer afterwards. and if it starts working, start backing up your data. if not, then either your drive is a hopeless case that or you did it the same way this guy did it.

in which case you can start digging a hole on your yard to bury it in. ^^
Found the hard drive freezing technique on Gearlog. and the image of the frozen drive on Hardforum. Although I sincerely hope none of you folks would get to experience a failed hard drive. hope this blog entry would someday help anyone out there with a broken hard drive.

I really don’t see how lowering the temperature will help you drive. I suppose you’ve got nothing to lose though, if you already tried all other methods.

I sell PCs for a living and all I’m gonna say is Back-up, Back-up, and Back-up.
On the other hand I’ve heard this technique actually works for about 10 minutes or so.

baka, lol and if it still won’t work, one can put his head into the freezer to cool it off. ^^
Gab, thats true one should always backup. 10 minutes huh? sounds enough time to backup them files. ^^ unless of course if it were this guy ^^
