Sanyo Xacti HD1000
Bought the Sanyo Xacti HD1000 during my last trip to Singapore. I guess it’s about time I open the package, check out the camcorder, and do a review of it. Note that there’s also another one done by Danny Choo a while back that prompted me to buy this particular HD camcorder. Interested folks may check it out on his site. also even if I’ve already mentioned it on my previous post, I’d like to thank Double and Loba for the tip on Sim Lim Square that got me to save more than $200SGD. ^^
The HD1000 records 1080i HD videos onto SD cards, and though the max size of 8 gigabytes seem miniscule compared to the 60 gigabyte hard drives on other more expensive camcorders, much less the 4 gigabyte I have on my Xacti. 15 four gigabyte SD cards and the Xacti HD1000 don’t even come close to the price tag on other HD camcorders.
More accessories in plastic bags than I have digits.
Â
Looks tiny on my oversized hands. However, like they say about big hands… make your camera looks small. ^^
Large enough screen, btw yup that’s the gundam unicorn in the background, will finish and take some photos of it soon.
Love the blue glow, sorry for the blurry photo, it’s kind of hard to have one hand on the power button while taking a picture using the Canon EOS.
Got me a lens protector filter for the Xacti as well, it doesn’t look too strange without the lens cap on it, but it does seem awkward when the cap is on. Then again as long as it protects the lens I’m happy to keep it on.
The ugly velvet bag that comes with it. Looks like some sort of small handbag, then again you won’t need to worry about would-be robbers knowing your carrying an expensive hd1000 on you. Nor will cops mistakenly think that you’re carrying a strange looking pistol. and with the risk of being redundant, as long as it protects the Xacti from those unwanted dents and scratches, I’ll take it.
The dock comes with an array of connection, HDMI, composite RCA jack, USB and the power socket. However I searched among the amazing array of cables only to find out the HDMI cable doesn’t come as a free accessory.
Unfortunately the power socket connects only onto the dock and not on the Xacti. So travelers must lug the docking port around with them which can be a real pain.
just realized there’s a concealed plug on the bottom of the handle where one can plug the power cord. ^^; sorry about that.
Overall the Xacti HD1000 is sure winner for folks seeking a handy high def camcorder, and is definitely a worthwhile purchase. What can I say; the price tag on it might be a bit hefty. But capturing those fleeting moments on 1080i HD with a tiny power ranger pistol is priceless.

no problem Spiky, but if it’s not too much trouble it might be better if he survey the other stores as well. who knows he might find a place where it’s cheaper.

hi sir marvin, hope you can help me out, i just want to ask if what brand of sdhc card are you using for your xacti. i’m really having problems in choosing which is a good sdhc. most of them are class 6 but their speeds differ a lot not to mention their price ranges. is it advisable to get a very high speed (like the sandisk extreme III 30 mb edition or a panasonic 20 mb edition) or will an adata, pqi, transcend sdhc do. will a class 4 sdhc do well? i read that the choice of the sdhc will depend on the capacity of the camera, even if you get a very high speed sdhc and your camera is not, it will not maximize the ability of the card.
hope you can help me out sir marvin.
many thanks!

I’m using a 4gb sandisk and an 8gb trancend. not sure about the speed, however my advise is to buy a couple of affordable 4 to 8 gigabyte SDHC. your battery will run out even before your card would run out of space anyway. plus it’ll save you money to buy some other gadget. ^^

thanks very much for your advice sir marvin! i will definitely follow your advice!
many thanks again sir and more power!

hey Edoardo, unfortunately I don’t know any shop in Bali. however have you tried Amazon.com?
October 16th, 2008 at 8:17 pm
Hello Marvin,
I am thinking of getting this camera and the Patumi underwatercasing to go with it.
Of course, simple things always come in your way and I have a simple question: how long does the batteries last when new? not that I will hold my breath underwater so long but if I have to open up the case to change the batterries it is a pain…thanks for your time
October 17th, 2008 at 7:15 am
hey Ced I’m sorry but I’m not sure how long the default battery last, I had mine changed to a higher capacity one as soon as I got it.
